Why It’s Time to Talk

Men’s mental health has been overlooked for too long. Across the UK, thousands of men struggle daily with anxiety, depression, and emotional distress — often without telling anyone.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), three in four suicides in the UK are by men, and suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50. (ONS – Suicides in England and Wales)

Men are often taught to “man up,” “stay strong,” or keep emotions bottled inside. But staying silent doesn’t make things better — it just makes the struggle lonelier.

Understanding the Signs

Poor mental health can show up in many ways, not just sadness or tears. For men, signs often include:

  • Increased anger, irritability, or frustration

  • Withdrawal from family, friends, or hobbies

  • Risk-taking behaviour or heavy drinking

  • Problems sleeping or loss of motivation

  • Feeling trapped, hopeless, or without purpose

Recognising these signs early can be the difference between coping and crisis.

Why Men Often Don’t Ask for Help

Many men find it difficult to reach out. A Mind UK study found that only 36% of NHS referrals for talking therapies are men, even though mental health problems affect both genders equally. (Mind – Men and mental health)

This reluctance is often tied to fear of judgment, embarrassment, or believing that admitting struggles is a sign of weakness. But asking for help is one of the strongest things a person can do.
